The club was launched in 1993 at Browning Harbour when Lou Henshaw and family provided a location for our modest clubhouse along with seed money collected from participants in the annual “Round Pender Race”. A fleet of Lasers and Flying Juniors – many donated – were repaired and upgraded over the years. We have enjoyed tremendous island sponsorship in the intervening years and purchased 4 locally-made customized Flying Juniors along with a fleet of refurbished Laser dinghies. In late 2018, Flying Juniors were supplanted by 6 Pirate-class training boats acquired from a mainland sailing club.
The club initially operated on weekends in May and June for local youngsters. The curriculum has now expanded to (4) single week summer courses covering CANSail levels 1 to 4. Participants range from age 9 onwards – spanning first timers to advanced dinghy sailors.
Instructors are certified with SailCanada/BCSail to teach CANSail (formerly White Sail) classes. All participants in CANSail level 1 and 2 courses receive a certificate at week’s end. While taught by CANSail Level 3/4 Certified instructors, the Laser course is offered as a fun experience for advanced participants as to learn the finer elements of sailing.
The club directors emphasize fun and safety on the water. Enrollment fills quickly in May with a July start to the season. With consistent on-shore breezes, Browning Harbour provides a unique spot to learn a life-long recreational skill.
