2020 Program (Corona Virus Dependent)

PIJSA plans to offer beginner sailing courses, CANSail Levels 1 & 2 and the more advanced CANSail Levels 3 & 4 this summer.  A Fun Sailing option should also be available.  For CANSail Levels 1 & 2, a student must be 9y old before the start of the course, and for CANSail Levels 3 & 4, a student must be 12y old and completed all or most of Level 2; preference will be given to those who have completed Level 2.  For the Fun Sailing students must be 12y old and have completed Level 2. Adults are welcome for all courses, but should recognize that being in a small dinghy, they must have some agility.  All students will be required to demonstrate their ability to swim in a PFD on the first day and participate in a capsizing exercise on the second day.  Failure to do either of these will result in termination in the course with no refund.

The courses last five days, 9 am to about 3.00-3.30 pm and will be offered in the following weeks: Level 1 & 2: July 13-17, July 27-31, Aug. 3-7, and Aug 17-21; Level 3 & 4: Aug. 3-7 and Aug 17-21; Fun Sailing: July 13-17 and July 27-31.  Registration shall begin May 1 for returning students and members of their household and May 15 for other students.  Registration is by email after 8 a.m. Pender time on May 1 and 15.  In your email, you should indicate which course(s) and dates, and who will be participating and their age.  The return email will provide the registration documents, which should be returned quickly (within 2 weeks).  General information is available on the PIJSA website or from Allyson Coffey 604-220-7259 or Bruce Waygood 250-818-8555.  The fees for the CanSail courses will be $175 and for the Fun Sail where there is little instruction, $125.  Because of the Covid-19 outbreak, fees will be due upon confirmation of a course occurring, and can be paid by etransfer to the above email or by leaving in the PIJSA folder at the Real Estate Office at the Driftwood.

The Level 1 & 2 courses use Pirate class boats. Level 3 & 4 courses and fun sailing use Laser 1 and 2 boats and Bytes.  The CANSail courses shall have BCSail certified coaches; the Fun Sail will be organized by Directors and/or Community coaches who will be on the water with the boats.  The capacity of our courses each week are 15 students in total for Level 1 & 2 and 10 students for Level 3 & 4.  For Level 1 & 2, students are three to a boat unless a student is an adult, then there would be two to a boat, and no more than 10 Level 1 students will be accepted each week.  Fun Sailing may be restricted to 5 students per week.

The current situation with coronavirus will be discussed by the PIJSA Board April 19th, and any additional decisions in respect to this problem will be conveyed on our website and in the May edition of the Pender Post.  In the event of cancellation of courses by PIJSA, any course fees paid will be refunded. However, final decisions will probably not have to be made until early July, and hopefully, the situation will have abated.  Those who have registered will be kept informed by email.

PIJSA would not be able to deliver its programs at the present rates without the support of the CRD, Port Browning Pub and Marina, Nu-to-Yu, Tru-Valu, CRD Parks and Recreation, Pender Island Yacht Club, and Magic Lake Property Owners Society.
