Pender Island Junior Sailing Association (PIJSA)
PIJSA will hold its AGM Sunday January 30th, 2022 at the Community Hall at 10 am. Attendees will most likely need to be double vaccinated, wear masks, and provide a BC Vaccination QR code. If you are going to attend the AGM, please let Bruce Waygood know by January 27th, preferably earlier. Given the recent Covid announcements, this session will also be conducted using Zoom video conferencing.
The Association is looking for new directors. Directors attend about six Board meetings (each about 2h) and are expected to contribute one week (Monday-Friday, about 8.30 am to 4 pm) of beach duty in July or August. Directors are not responsible for instruction, but are involved in safety and organization. Having sailing experience is helpful but not a requirement. Depending upon their time and interest, Directors are also involved in boat and site maintenance, possibly 4-6 mornings in the spring and fall. If you are interested in being a director, please contact Bruce Waygood, (250) 818-8555 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Despite the COVID pandemic, PIJSA had a successful 2021 season and is looking forward to the coming year. Details of course offerings should be available by April at the latest, and returning students will get the first opportunity to register. PIJSA has offered one week sailing courses that lead to certification of CANSail Levels 1 to 4. Level 1&2 is for those older than 9y; Level 3&4 requires Level 2 competency and being older than 12y. While most students are children; adults have taken the courses. In some years, PIJSA has not been able to hire instructors for Level 3&4, in which case supervised Fun Sailing is offered. Fees last year were $175; they are likely to be increased in 2022. Typically Level 1&2 courses are offered for four weeks from mid-July to the third week in August using Pirate class dinghies with 2 or 3 students per boat. Level 3&4 are offered for 2 or 3 weeks using single-handed Laser 1’s, Bytes, or double manned Laser 2s.
PIJSA thanks the following volunteers who helped this past year: Margaret Alpen, Tom Bon, Denis Budnyk, Catherine Dawson, Matthew Hinton, Jorgen Jesperson, Leone Mudie, Paz Rainville, Susan Underhill and Margaret Vergette. Satya Underhill was our Level 1&2 coach and Summer Jungula was a community coach supervising the fun sailing. The Directors were: John Ackermans, Tom Caston, Allison Coffey, Lisa Christensen, Lawrence Haave, Peter Hinton, Rick Mudie, Tim Underhill, Bob Vergette, Bruce Waygood, and Don Williams. The financial support of the Pender Island Yacht Club, Tru-Value Spirit Board, Parks & Recreation, and Magic Lake Property Owners Society is gratefully acknowledged.
